Saanane Island is a fully fledged National Park since July, 2013, covering an area of 2.18 sq km comprises of three islets and aquatic environment. The islets lie on the southern part of the main Island.
The park is located on an island in Lake Victoria in Mwanza. It is the first ever Government owned zoo. The park was a forest reserve and wildlife acclimatization zone at first. However, buffalo, bush-back, Dik dik, elephant, eland, impala, black rhino, topi, warthog and wildebeest, zebra, monkeys like pats and velvet, giraffe, porcupine and crocodiles are now successfully established here. The park is an excellent place for natural growth and shelters Impala, Rock Hyrax, Velvet Monkeys, Wild Cats, Clawless Otters and De-brazzas Monkeys too. Shockingly, wilder animals like rhinos were caged at first but not since the park was promoted to a Game Reserve. It is also a great marine spot for all types of fish, crocodiles, water snakes and Monitor lizards, other reptiles including tortoises, grass snakes, pythons and agama lizards.
